چکیده

SCIAMACHY limb-scatter measurements allow the continuous mapping of noctilucent clouds (NLCs) as well as the retrieval of NLC particle sizes since 2002. Longterm measurements of NLC particle sizes require high instrument stability or an accurate knowledge of the changing calibration parameters. For the NLC measurements we employ measurements in SCIAMACHY channel 1, whose transmission decreased significantly and non-linearly with time. This contribution describes the effect of instrumental degradation – if not properly corrected for – on the retrieved NLC particle sizes. Furthermore, a degradation correction scheme as well as a correction for solar cycle changes in the solar spectrum are described.

Tropical methane emissions: A revised view from SCIAMACHY onboard ENVISAT

[1] Methane retrievals from near-infrared spectra recorded by the SCIAMACHY instrument onboard ENVISAT hitherto suggested unexpectedly large tropical emissions. Even though recent studies confirm substantial tropical emissions, there were indications for an unresolved error in the satellite retrievals. Here we identify a retrieval error related to inaccuracies in water vapor spectroscopic param...

Initial validation of ENVISAT/SCIAMACHY columnar CO by FTIR profile retrievals at the Ground-Truthing Station Zugspitze

Carbon monoxide vertical profile retrievals from ground-based solar FTIR measurements at the Permanent Ground-Truthing Station Zugspitze (47.42 N, 10.98 E, 2964 m a.s.l.), Germany are used to validate columnar CO retrieved from ENVISAT/SCIAMACHY spectra (WFMDOAS version 0.4). The WFM-DOAS retrievals of CO include an empirical column scaling factor of 0.5. Therefore, not absolute column levels a...

Global column‐averaged methane mixing ratios from 2003 to 2009 as derived from SCIAMACHY: Trends and variability

[1] After a decade of stable or slightly decreasing global methane concentrations, ground‐based in situ data show that CH4 began increasing again in 2007 and that this increase continued through 2009. So far, space‐based retrievals sensitive to the lower troposphere in the time period under consideration have not been available. Here we report a long‐term data set of column‐averaged methane mix...

Studying Envisat Attitude with Sciamachy Limb-scatter Measurements

High pointing accuracy is a prime prerequisite of high quality remote sensing of atmospheric constituents using limb viewing instruments. SCIAMACHY limb measurements were affected by limb tangent height errors of up to 3 km during the initial phase of the Envisat mission. These errors were caused by inaccurate satellite attitude information and possibly an instrument misalignment. Retrieval of ...

Spectral studies of ocean water with space-borne sensor SCIAMACHY using Differential Optical Absorption Spectroscopy (DOAS)

Methods enabling the retrieval of oceanic parameter from the space borne instrumentation Scanning Imaging Absorption Spectrometer for Atmospheric ChartographY (SCIAMACHY) using Differential Optical Absorption Spectroscopy (DOAS) are presented. SCIAMACHY onboard ENVISAT measures back scattered solar radiation at a spectral resolution (0.2 to 1.5 nm). The DOAS method was used for the first time t...
